2023 Fall Workshop in Los Angeles

October 6, 2023 - Los Angeles

On October 6, 2023, a fall networking reception was held at the residence of the Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles. Titled Navigating Renewed Opportunities for Sister Cities, this event was co-sponsored by three organizations: the Consulates General of Japan in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the California-Japan Sister Cities Network.

Approximately 50 people attended, including sister city leaders, youth leaders, and business leaders in Southern California. It was the second in-person reception in Los Angeles for CJSCN’s network, after the 2022 spring event.

The event began with words of welcome from Consul General Kenko Sone, followed by remarks from CJSCN Board President Meg Mizutani. Ms. Mizutani expressed gratitude to both consulates for their continuing support and partnership and outlined CJSCN’s mission. The CJSCN board members present at the event were: Bryan Takeda (Pasadena), Steven Sigafus (San Diego), Kathleen Kimura (San Francisco and Millbrae), and Meg Mizutani (Sebastopol).

After that, we welcomed remarks from two guest speakers: Ambassador Nina Hachigian (Special Representative for City and State Diplomacy, U.S. Department of State) and Owen Miller (San Diego-Yokohama Sister City Society youth leader), followed by a presentation by Ms. Alissa Miky, CEO of Cashi Cake Inc. Finally, CJSCN Board Member Steven Sigafus gave a toast.

Following the presentations, the attendees were divided into seven breakout groups. The groups were prompted to share information about their program and discuss how sister city leaders, youth members, and business leaders can collaborate and build partnerships.

While enjoying the excellent food prepared by the Consul General’s chef, the group discussion continued in the beautiful garden of the Consul General’s residence. We all appreciated the opportunity to see old friends and make new friends.

CJSCN would like to once again express our deep gratitude to Consul General Sone and Mrs. Sone for hosting this event at their residence. We also would like to thank consulate staff in Los Angeles, our other co-host the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco, our sponsors, and all of the attendees. We look forward to seeing more collaborative work in the future!
